The 23rd Hadong Wild Tea Culture Festival will take place in Hwagae-myeon and 


Akyyang-myeon in Hadong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, from May 10th - 13th



The home of Korea’s tea, Hadong, has spent more than 1,000 years with tea.


Compared to this, it is a year of farming that growing tea and drinking 


the young leaves of the tea which is very short time.



However, the transparent mellow scent of tea has passed from on person to another, 


and from one generation to the next.


The scent of tea ingrained in the land, sky and people of Hadong is now about to spread to this era, 


beyond this place, toward the next 1,000 years and the world.

 [ IDENTITY 



The base






Mountains and rivers remain same, but only people come and go. 


Mountains and rivers in Hadong must have been in place for a long time, 


but the visitors called this place in different way. 



Hadong-gun, located in the westernmost part of Gyeongsangnam-do, 


overlooks Mount Jiri to the north, Mount Baegun to the west, and the South Sea to the south. 


Hadong’s west is connected with Jeolla-do in the border with Hwagae Stream and Seomjin River.






Such geographical conditions in Hadong would not have changed 


much before a person started to live in that land. 


As the relics of the Bronze Age were discovered, 


it is assumed that humans lived in land, rivers and seas of Hadong. 



The oldest name that remains on record for Hadong is Dasachon, 


and it was called “Handasa-gun” during the reign of King Shinmun of Silla. 


After the Silla unified the Three Kingdoms, it was called “Hadonggun”.



Since then, there have been several expansion and contraction of the administrative region, 


passing through Goryeo, Joseon Dynasty and the modern history.


 Also, during the reign of King Taejong of the Joseon Dynasty, 


it was also called Hanamhyeon, combined with Namhaehyeon. 



However, it was separated and became Hadonghyeon after only a year. 


Although people who lived on this land came and left, the name “Hadong”, 


which means east of the Seomjin River, has not changed much but continued it's history.






Even though the name of Hadong changed, and people gathered and scattered, 


nature uneventfully embraced all of it in its arms. 


People lived on the base of Hadong for a long time in company with tea cultivation. 



The wild tea tree, which grew in a place that was temper-resistant, became a gem of the Hadong. 


The wild tea of Hadong has become a content of festival today.





























 [ HISTORY 



Time of Tea








Land where nature is the owner






The environment governs the life of the person who lives there,


culture and the history that people make.


Hadong has mountains, rivers and the seas. It makes high daily temperature difference


because of the huge mountains, seas and the streams. 




Hadong also has a lot of rain, recording an annual average of about 1,400~1,500mm,


which is one of the highest record in Korea.






This environment was the owner of Hadong for a long time. 


It has experienced a lack of the flat ground to farm of make a metropolitan city. 


Although the mountains were cleared early, it was not a good environment to grow rice. 



Between 1661 and 1745, Hadong-eup, the center of politics and administration in Hadong, 


was moved for 7 times.


 As such, Hadong-gun had have difficulty building a large city with people.






Nature was able to maintain its own shape and characteristic for a long time because 


human life was difficult and inconvenient.



Despite the ups and downs of the modern history,  


the development and transformation of Hadong was slow, 


even when economic development was the nation’s best ideology.



 In Hadong, there was not a breath of man, but a breath of the land that goes with time. 


Tea plant thrived on that land.

The history of Hadong’s tea is same with the history of our country.


According to the “The Chronicles of the Three states”, 


It was recorded that in 828, the third year of King Heungdeok’s reign, 


the Daeryeomgong, who went to the Tang, brought tea seeds, 


and King Heungdeok planted it at Mountain Jiri. 



During the reign of Queen Seonduk, which was 150-200 years ahead of that period, 


tea was already introduced to Silla, but it was after this period that the tea was grown and consumed. 






According to Shin-jeung-dong-guk-yeo-jiseung- ram, compiled during the Joseon Dynasty, 


tea was planted on Mountain Jiri by King Heunddeok’s command that were recoreded in the Jinjumok Tosanjo.


 Based on this fact, it is assumed that the first tea plantation in our history 


was around the Mountain Jiri under the jurisdiction of Jinjumok. 



It is Hadong-gun that has all these conditions, 


and a tea plantation was built at the entrance of Ssanggye Temple in Hadong to remember it.






Through Silla and Goryeo, tea naturally became closely related to the practice of Buddhism’s good. 


Cho-e-sun-sa, who is known to have established Korea’s tea culture during 


the late Joseon Dynasty, made a Song-si(poem that has a form of a song) called “Dongdasong” about a tea.



 Cho-e-sun-sa praised Hwagae area for having the best environment in the country to grow tea; 


‘The tea plantation is growing across the street in Hwagae area, and there is no larger tea plantation in Korea.’


 and ‘In Da-gyeong, the tea plantation is best to grow between rocks, 


and the tea plantations in Hwagae are all in the middle of the valley and rocks.”






The tea culture, which was closely related to Buddhism, 


flourished greatly during the Goryeo Dynasty, when Buddhism was revered.



There was ‘So’, which was the special administrative region used to produce important national products,


 such as gold, silver, iron, paper and pottery, and 


there was ‘Daso’ that was only one to produce tea and provide it to the royal family as a tribute. 



During the Goryeo Dynasty, there were several Daso in Gyeongsang-do and Jeolla-do. 


Among them, Hwagae Daso is believed to have existed since the Silla, as Bugok, 


a residence of the special class, has been located in Hwagae Daso in the Silla.

Nature, Human and Tea






Even if the nature grows tea plantation and grows good tea leaves, 


the rest of the work is up to the human to harvest them and turn them into tea. 



Tea leaves, even they are from the same tree, are also born with tea that has a totally different quality,


 depending on the touch and sincerity of a human.  Humans make tea valuable.






It is the nature of Hadong that grows excellent tea in foggy, 


watery conditions made by Seomjin River and Hwagae Stream and gravelladen ground.


But for more than a thousand years, the life and sweat of the human who protected 


the tea and made it special have completed and succeeded Hadong’s tea.






Hadong has many topographical features consisting of mountains and streams, 


so people still wipes and pick each tea with their own hands.


Although mass production is impossible, tea retains a deeper taste as if tea Communes with humans. 



Also, unlike machine farming, which harvest tea in form of same size and length, 


a person can select and harvest only the best tea leaves grown in a single tea tree.






This is an important factor in maintaining the value and quality of the tea. 


With the technology “Roasting in Hadong’s way”(dry process of evaporating


 the moisture of tea leaves from hot cauldrons) that has long been coming down from Hadong, 


Hadong’s tea will be reborn as a tea with the best quality that Goryeo had paid 


to the royal family and China as a tribute. 






More than 95 percent of the total production of green tea in Hadong is the highest-graded green tea, 


including U-jeon, Se-jak, Jung-jak, and Dae-jak,etc, and the normal tea-bags and low-end 


tea’s production is only about 5 percent.


 Hadong’s tea is the best handmade green tea made by nature, human and history.













Understanding of Tea








There are many kinds of tea. Although there are various tea leaves in one kind of tea tree, the color, 


taste and scent of tea are all different depending on when tea leaves are harvested and 


the degree of fermentation, etc.






Firstly, there are spring tea and summer tea by the seasons. 


Spring tea tastes soft and has a good taste and scent, 


so most of the best teas are mostly spring tea.






There are two types of summer tea: Dumul tea, which is harvested between mid-June and late-June, 


and Saemul Tea, which is harvested between early August and mid-August. 


Both have a strong taste, and Saemul Tea’s taste is especially strong. 


Autumn tea is harvested in the last of the year and called Nemul Tea. 


It is expected to be found between late September and early October, 


and has a rough appearance due to its high fiber content.






According to the degree of fermentation, we can classify the tea. 


Green tea, which is the representative of tea, is not fermented and Cheong tea, 


Oryong tea is fermented in the middle degree. 



The black tea made during the process of passing over to Europe is a fully fermented tea. 


Also, tea made by fermenting using microbes such as fungi and lactobacillus is 


called post-fermented tea, and China’s Puer tea is representative.

Hadong Green tea to the world !






Our tea and tea culture with more than 1,200 years history, has been unnoticed for a long time. 


That’s why we looked so small compared to Japanese tea culture, 


which has been difficult to keep up with Chinese traditions, 


history, tea types in specific ways. 



Since the 1990s, however, active excavation of “our tea culture” have begun. 


At the same time, domestic tea production sites such as Hadong also tried to brand the tea.






Hadong-gun registered a ‘Hadong Green tea’ in a geographical display


designated by the National Agricultural Products Quality Management Service in 


2003 to develop and manage green tea as a representative brand of Hadong. 



In 2005, the Hadong Tea Culture Center was established close to the tea market near Ssanggye 


Temple to help the public know Hadong’s wild tea.






Institute of Hadong Green Tea, which began its activities with the completion of the main building in 2007,


 has become a cornerstone for scientific verification and 


quantification for the globalization of Hadong Green Tea. 



Institute of Hadong Green Tea has conducted various research and support businesses to 


inform the world of excellence as well as establishing the status of Hadong Green Tea.













Hadong Green tea became Heritage of World






It was in 2005 that new chances were met for the management and branding of Hadong Green Tea. 



The traditional tea farming in Hadong was designated as Korea’s No. 6 


Important Agricultural Heritage by the Ministry of Agriculture, 


Food and Rural Affairs in recognition of its historical achievements, the creation of a modest 


agricultural landscape, the positive impact on the environmental conservation, and diverse tea cultures.






Thanks to this achievement, Hadong immediately began to 


promote the inclusion of Globally Important Agricultural Heritage. 



The Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System was introduced


 in 2002 by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, which evaluates traditional farming activities, 


landscape, biodiversity, and land-use systems and certifies valuable agricultural resources to the next generation. 



In 2014, guduljang (floor heating system in Korea) from Cheongsan-do and Jeju’s field walls were listed as Korea’s


 first and second major globally Important Agricultural Heritage.


It is known that the Globally Important Agricultural Heritage should be











World’s savory Hadong Green Tea






Starbucks. It is the biggest and most influential coffee shop in the world based in Seattle, U.S.


 Those who are in younger than 50s know Starbucks.


 However, it is now well known that people around the world are drinking tea supplied by Korea’s green tea.






Hadong tried to contact various companies and institutions around 


the world to promote Hadong Green Tea to expand its market to overseas markets. 



The U.S. Starbucks was also included. Starbucks got interest in tradition and excellence of Hadong Green Tea. 


They questioned how Hadong Could supply guaranteed quality of green tea even in the difficult situation of mass cultivation. 


Hadong turned the question into a belief by promising to select and provide tea more than a certain standard from local farms.






In January 2017, Hadong and Starbucks signed an export supply contract of 100 tons of powdered green tea. 


It was worth 2.15 million in U.S. dollars and it was about 2.5 billion won in Korean money. 


Green tea, produced in Hadong of 50,000 population that Starbucks doesn’t even there, is now being introduced to the world 


with the name of Starbucks, the world’s most famous brand.

Q. Please introduce about Hadong Wild Tea Culture Festival.






A. Hadong Wild Tea Culture Festival, which celebrates its 23rd anniversary this year,  is a festival 


with the theme of Hadong-gun’s specialties, just like many other festivals. 


It is a festival that has a long history of green tea in Hadong and has a characteristic that Hadong’s wild tea is different from other regions. 


In the early days, it was a small festival in the region and became the best festival representing our country these days.



In 2017, Hadong traditional tea was listed as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage, 


and Hadong’s wild tea culture is now moving toward a festival that many people around the world enjoy. 


The World Tea Expo will be held in 2022, and the venue for the expo will be decided this year. 


Hadong, the home of green tea in Korea, is planning a supportive festival to become the host city of the World Tea Expo.













Q. Please explain the directivity of the 23rd Hadong Wild Tea Culture Festival.






A. As we are preparing for the 2022 World Tea Expo, 


we are creating a festival that people can enjoy the festival with people around the world according to the concept here. 



From two years ago, we have been doing the World Tea Culture Festival together with Hadong Wild Tea Culture Festival. 


People can experience and watch the many countries’ culture around the world at Hadong Wild Tea Culture Festival.



It is not only for the Hadong tea but also for the programs to reach beyond the world, and people can experience about 12 countries’ tea culture in Hadong. 


We are creating a festival in a way that can best highlight our individuality and resources so that it can be a festival enjoy by tourists.













Q. Can you introduce some programs for visitors of the festivals?






A. We had a green tea food contest before, and the problem was that the contest itself was great, 


but it couldn’t be put into the practical use after the competition. 


We needed to make practical food that was easily accessible in real life, that we could make and sell in restaurants. 


To make the improvement of this problem, Tea Foodzone and Tea Café were made this year. 



In particular, we are planning to enter Starbucks’ promotional and sales booths this year. 


Hadong green tea is said to have been exported abroad, but the general public doesn’t know that where or what brand it was exported. 


Also, there will be a promotional booth of Paris Croissant.






And we are also planning to have a tea party, which is held at the Beautiful Tea Part Competition, and a world tea culture festival, 


a Byeolcheonji Tea Culture School, and experience programs where tourists can directly blend beyond the Tea blending contest.


 The goal is not to stop as the Tea blending competition, but to develop recipes and products that can be sold. 



We want to provide chances for people, especially children, to feel friendly and experience green tea from an early age. 


As such, this year, we are preparing various programs where you can experience the event in person with curiosity, 


not just watching the competition of some experts.













Q. Please say a word to the visitors who want to come to the festival.





A. When you arrived in Hadong, I recommend walking on the tea field road instead of visiting the event places or a café where you can taste tea. 


I want you to feel where and how the tea is growing, and what shape, light and smell it has. 



If you have a chance to feel and understand the tea itself, not just as a product, 


you will be able to enjoy the color and flavor of the tea in the future when you make tea and drink it.



In particular, this year, we plan to create programs for families to participate in together and experience to meet the children’s eye level. 


We will combine green tea with other industries and products to give you a new level of experience and pleasure.

2019 Hadong Wild Tea Culture Festival Programs









Festival of tea connecting the world






Hadong Wild Tea Culture Festival,  


which is celebrating its 23rd anniversary this year, has a certain goal for this year. 


Its goal is to show the foundation for hosting the 2022 Hadong Wild Tea Expo through the festival. 



In recent years, the company announced the name of Hadong and 


the brand of Hadong Green Tea to the world by listing the Hadong’s Globally Important Agricultural Heritage and 


exporting Hadong Green Tea to the U.S. headquarters of Starbucks and being selected as the world’s festival city. 



Hadong has a plan to complete ‘globalization’ through the Hadong Wild Tea Expo in 2022 with this year’s festival. 


The most important challenge to the global culture and tourism festival of Hadong 


Wild Tea Culture Festival will begin in May 2019.






For this challenge, the 23rd Hadong Wild Tea Culture Festival is preaparing 


about 50 detailed programs including pre-events, representative programs, key programs, official programs, 


performance, lectures, exhibitions, experience and temple programs.

Pre-event







Hadong Wild Tea Jinsang-Parade

Hadong Wild Tea Culture Festival starts on April 20th at the square of Gwanghwamun, Seoul. 


Visitors can meet the Hadong Wild Tea Culture Festival through the Jinsang-Parade, 


which is like the Street Performance, and it is for informing the public of the Hadong Wild Tea Culture Festival.

The festival’s theme zone, which will be set up at the entrance of the festival and


 be first to be visited by visitors, is a space that shows Hadong wild tea’s leap toward a global festival 


through its registration as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage. 


The Gobally Important Agricultural Heritage Museum, the National Important Fishery Heritage Museum, 


the World Festival City Museum, and the General Information Center, etc. will be set up















Tea café and Experience Zone

A café booth will be set up near Hwagae Stream where visitors 


can enjoy the diverse taste of Hadong green tea in a limited festival space.

Contest of Korea’s Beautiful Gathering for Tea

There will be a contest for the people enjoying tea in Korea.


 Visitors will be given a tea meeting to give them unforgettable memories for a long time.

World Tea Culture Festival

It is a small Hadong Wild Tea Expo where visitors can see and 


experience tea culture in one place about 12 countries including Japan, China, the U.S., Britain, India, Turkey, 


Russia, Morocco, Sri Lanka, Kazakhstan, and Vietnam.



In particular, Korea serves as a promotional booth to inform not only visitors 


but also the people around the world of the history and culture of our tea by showing them specific details 


according to the times such as the Goryeo, Joseon Dynasty, and the modern period.

Participants from each town of Hadong will perform various performances 


including dance and singing for the name of the town and its own happiness at the festival. 


The two-day program will add fun with performances by local singers and talent donors as well as residents.

It is part of a promotional program to inform domestic and foreign visitors of Hadong Wild Tea,

The one of the greatest works of modern and contemporary fiction in Korea is the novel, Toji(land). 


A night concert will be held at the Akyang Josigoga, which has become the real background of the novel, Toji. 


At this concert, they will give time to enjoy life in a different way from downtown cafes,


 such as the atmosphere of Hadong, the romance of night, and the comfort of the green tea.

It is an experience program where you can watch various foods made by tea leaves and 


make them yourself if you have a little extra time.

This program allows visitors to experience the inseparable tea culture 


with pottery through collaboration with experience hall of pottery. 


The Tea Producer Institute in Hadong runs a traditional outdoor tea-making experience 


hall to make the interesting experience of making things by hand as well as viewing things for visitors.

5th Hadong Bukcheon Red Poppy Festival







There is no time to rest at the spring festivals in Hadong, the well-known area of culture and tourism. 


As soon as the Hadong Wild Tea Culture Festival closes, a red poppy flower will turn red in Bukchon-myeon of Hadong, 


South Gyeongsang Province. It was named because the flower was beautiful enough to being compared to Yang-gi-be, 


which was the most beautiful woman in the Tang Dynasty, and it is ready to welcome the tourists in the warm spring.






When we think about the spring flowers, many people come up with the cherry blossoms or apricot flowers, 


but at the end of spring, there are fascinating flowers which claimed to be the queen of spring flowers. 


It is a red poppy. Unlike the poppy we know, it has no opium and is only for watching. 


One of the most famous flower poppies’ area is Bukcheon-myeon, Hadong, South Gyeongsang Province, 


which is growing the largest red poppy field in the country.

There are red poppies along the Route 2 heading from Hadong to Jinju.


Bukcheon-myeon, where the festival is held, is far from the main tourist attraction in Hadong, 


and it is difficult to find accommodation and restaurants nearby. 



However, every spring and autumn, a million people from all over the country visit this village. 


Although it has already been famous for its cosmos and buckwheat flower festivals for more than a decade, 


the poppy festival is joined from five years ago and rises its value in the region. 



As the largest size in the country, there are many red poppies everywhere, 


including dukbang gil, roads, and railroads. It is as large as 25 hectares and 34 soccer fields. 



As a result, Bukcheon-myeon runs a rail bike that allows visitors to look around the wide venue. 


5.3 kilometers tunnel section runs from the old Bukcheon station to Yangbo Station, 


where visitors can see colorful lights, music and Hadong’s four seasons murals.



The festival, which is promoted as part of the direct payment system for the preservation of the landscape, 


consists of a variety of programs for experiencing rural romance and nostalgia,


 along with Hadong’s charm of its nature.

Q. Please, introduce about the Red Poppy Festival starting from May 17th.






A. Hadong Bukcheon Red Poppy Festival, started in 2015, is celebrating its 5th anniversary this year. 


Before 2015, the Cosmos and Buckwheat Flower Festival, which is held in September, 


was the only festival in Buckcheonmyeon.



Being limited to autumn only once a year, I have considered about crops that can grow in spring. 


In the meantime, we began to grow a special crop, a red poppy, in conjunction with the Landscape Preservation Work, 


which was designed to enhance the landscape of farming and fishing villages and to promote the revitalization 


of the local economy through local festivals and urban exchanges. 



The spring flower festival, the Red Poppy Festival, is visited by many tourists every year,

Q. What kind of programs are there?






A. The most popular program is the rail bike experience. 


With the relocation of Bukcheon Station in 2017, we have built a rail park 


on the existing railway line and operates a rail bike on a 5.3 km section. 



Rail park is operated on a reservation basis.


Reservations can be made in advance through the website or it can be made on the site. 


However, it is highly likely to be sold out before and after the festival, 


so I recommend you make a reservation in advance.



 In addition, various experiences and stage performances are prepared, but the focus is a flower.


 To show people the most beautiful flowers during the festival, 


we have been thoroughly managing and supervising since last year when the Cosmos Festival ended.












Q. Did you have any troubles holding the event?






A. Bukcheon-myeon is a very typical farming village. 


As such, the aging of farming households has already progressed, 


and there is a considerable shortage of workers. 


However, local officials and 45 residents have successfully held the festival every year, 


bringing about a revival of the local economy and fostering community awareness.

A. Each year, Agricultural Association Corporation makes its own brochures Based on the contents of the booklet,


 we strive to create a festival that will be satisfied with both visitors and festival members,


 while improving and supplementing what needs to be improved each year. 



This year, in order to introduce various attractions, 


the festival has created a cluster of red poppies in a wider variety.


 As it is a festival made by 45 residents, you many find something lacking in the festival,


 but I hope you will make a good memory at the gradually developing Red Poppy Festival in Hadong, Bukcheon.
